Dhokla is a traditional Indian dish that’s similar to polenta. It’s made by cooking a thick batter of rice flour or gram flour and water until it becomes firm enough to cut into squares. This recipe uses a microwave instead of a stovetop for convenience. If you are a dhokla lover then I will suggest not to miss a single sentence where I have shared dhokla on microwave recipe.

Here’s how to make it at home.

Mainly Indian use gram flour / besan for the delicious dhokla but you can use any type of rice flour you prefer, such as white rice flour, brown rice flour, or even instant rice flour. If you don’t have a pressure cooker, you can also cook the dhokla in a regular pot with a lid. Just follow these instructions carefully.

Ingredients FOR BATTER

  • Gram flour (besan) or rice flour – 1.5 cup

  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Oil – 1 tablespoon

  • Water

  • Yogurt – 1/2 cup

  • Ginger Paste – 1 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon

  • Sugar – 1 tablespoon

  • Eno – 1 1/2 teaspoon

Ingredients For tempering

  • Asafoetida / hing – 1 pinch

  • Mustard Seeds – 1 teaspoon

  • Curry leaves – 8-10

  • green chili chop/slit – 2

  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon

  • Sugar – 1 teaspoon

  • Water – 1/2 cup

  • Coriander leaves for enhance



  • Put the gram flour or rice flour into a bowl then add yogurt, ginger paste,salt,turmeric,sugar and oil.
  • Add enough water to make a thick paste and beat it until it smooth.
  • Then add eno and stir.
  • Heat up a microwave safe container in the microwave until hot.
  • Pour the mixture into the container and cook for 5-7 minutes.
  • Remove from the microwave .
  • Heat a tadka pan then add oil for tadka then add hing, curry leaves,mustard seeds, salt, sugar and green chilis.
  • Saute it until it sightly cook and then add water.
  • Then place the dhokla into a plate then cut it into small square shape then add the flavourful tadka into it.
  • Afterthat enhance the dhokla with some coriander leaves.
  • Then serve it some sweet or spicy chutney.
  • you can serve this for eve snacks and also for breakfast.

The simple ratio is for 250 gm dhokla you need to add 1/2 table spoon of baking soda.
